Westminster Abbey, home of monks and burial place of monarchs, has been a significant landmark for hundreds of years. These days, it’s both an active church and a popular tourist attraction. The fact that services are still held here, means that the ‘opening’ hours for tourists may be more limited than other attractions – it’s not open Sunday or after 1.45pm on Saturday for example – but if it fits into your schedule, it’s definitely worth a visit.
We spent about two hours here, walking around the various chapels, the cloisters, the Chapter House and the Choir Stalls. We hired audio guides for £4.00, which were welcoming, informative and conscious of how busy the Abbey can get: in the more popular and smaller areas, we were reminded to keep moving.
My highlights were the tombs of Elizabeth I and Mary I, sisters and rivals who were buried together, Poet’s Corner, and the beautiful ceilings and stained glass windows in Henry VII’s Lady Chapel.
There were so many different monuments and memorials, that the audio tour couldn’t possibly cover them all. If I was to visit again, I would like more time to wander around by myself and just read the inscriptions, and wonder about all the people who’ve also visited this spot over the past thousand years.
Entry to Westminster Abbey cost £10.00 for an adult. It’s located across from the houses of parliament and Big Ben, near the Westminster tube station.
