For beachgoers, fishermen or fisherwomen, kayakers, canoeists, hikers, history buffs and anyone who loves playing in the sun, a visit to Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park is in order. One of the focal points of this park is a lighthouse, which was attacked by Seminoles, destroyed and later reconstructed. Tours of the lighthouse are Thursday through Monday. This area was also part of the link to the Underground Railroad which assisted slaves as they made their way to freedom in the Bahamas.

I like the park for the great kayaking opportunities. Although launching a kayak or canoe can be a bit wearisome due to the fact that you have to portage it to the launch sites, the effort will pay off. There is a concession area here that will rent ocean kayaks if you don't bring your own equipment.

Hiking areas take you through either mangrove wetlands or the coastal areas. There are bike trails too.

There is a fee to enter the park. It's currently (2010) $8.00 USD for 2-8 people per vehicle. Single occupants pay $4.00. Bicyclists or pedestrians pay $2.00 each. The park is open all year (including holidays) from 8 am until sundown.
