I am lumping Kirby Hall in with my “Castling” scouting tip for a couple of reasons: it is still partly a ruin and it has that majestic, royal look. This location is not easy to find, even with GPS. However, one of the best views of Kirby Hall is from the road that runs parallel to the house. Just as the hills part, you will catch a glimpse of the tops of several chimneys. While not easy to find, this day out is good for the entire family. There are some stairs, but there is plenty on the ground level to view as well.
Construction on the hall began in the late 1500s and was continually improved upon in homes of one day hosting the Queen. The hall is one of the most ornate of its time and has several exceptionally fine-carved reliefs and friezes. Money and marital issues resulted in the halls subsequent decline. Currently, only a few rooms of the hall have been stabilized and/or restored. Visitors can visit the Great Hall with exquisite wood working, and can look over where the Long Gallery would have been—be sure to look at the artists rendition. My favorite elements of the hall are the bay windows and the great garden which has been reconstructed to match the original setting.
There is a lot to see both inside and out at Kirby Hall. You could spend a couple of hours just looking at the architecture, moving throughout the restored areas, walking amongst the remaining ruins, and relaxing in the garden. However, take care as Kirby Hall is also home to many peacocks more than happy to voice their displeasure at your arrival or flash you their plumage!
