Castle Caernarfon: Castle Caernarfon: Wales’ Crown-Jewel

Truly one of the most splendid of the medieval castles is Caernarfon. The motte and bailey castle plan was to include several towers, two main gatehouses, two drawbridges, and several other fortifications. Construction began in 1283 but was halted only 11 years in 1294 later by the Madog rebellion. Following the rebellion, the King’s Gate—one of two main gatehouses--and the northern wall and towers were raised to fortify the interior. By 1330, King Edward I focused his financial efforts towards the north, and the remaining Queen’s Gate went unfinished.

According to historians, King Edward I planned the castle to be the seat of government in Wales. King Edward II was born in 1284 within Caernarfon’s boundaries and in 1301 was formally presented as the first English Prince of Wales and was granted rights and royalties of Welsh lands. This investiture was the start of the current tradition where the eldest son was crowned ‘Prince of Wales’. On 1 July 1969, Prince Charles was formally endowed at Caernarfon by Queen Elizabeth II as the 21st Prince of Wales.

Caernarfon is fairly easy to find well situated on the A487 and easily accessible via the A5. The surrounding town is a maze of short streets and passages leading either directly to or around the castle. Each street is lined with various style pubs, restaurants, and tea shops.
The main entrance places visitors in the middle of two major courtyards—the lower used for Prince Charles’ investiture. Inside the Queen’s Tower, is the regimental museum of the Royal Welch Fusiliers. While many museums within a castle are small and unremarkable, this museum is worth the extra time to visit. The Tower’s collection includes uniforms and weaponry from some of the earliest of the Fusiliers’ campaigns including current NATO and UN missions. For British and non-British visitors, I also highly recommend visiting the Throne room and taking a few minutes to actually read the display and watch and listen to the information on the Princely endowment ceremonies .

There are many passages throughout the castle, and while there are several stairs by which you can access the upper levels, I advise sturdy and rubber-soled walking shoes as the stairwells can be very narrow and slippery. Some of the staircases are very long and quite strenuous to climb. However, the view from the wall-walks and towers are exceptional!
Facilities are fairly modern although one must walk down metal galley planks to access. The gift shop is very well stocked with myriad of souvenirs, keepsakes, and assorted Welsh cakes and cookies.

A full tour (at moderate pace) of this castle can be accomplished within about 2 hours. Thus, there is plenty of time left to tour the surrounding town, have Welsh cakes and tea, or a full Welsh meal at local establishments. Or, if your “castling” craze is not yet satisfied, several other castles are within 20-30 minutes drive.
