Kenilworth is perhaps one of my favorite castles because of how it glows red in the setting sun! As with many castles in the area, Kenilworth is mostly ruins but it is listed as one of the largest castle ruins in the entire country. In addition, the castle also served as a “royal castle” through most of existence serving as a backdrop for Queen Elizabeth I and Robert Dudley, the earl of Leicester. In addition to the extensive ruins, there are several restored portions that give insight into life in period.

Kenilworth Castle was first established in the early 12th century including a Norman-style “keep” and a nearby priory. The outer stone walls and a dam for the nearby lake were added around the beginning of the 13th century and the castle withstood a major assault in 1266. New construction began at the castle to turn it into a palace and included a “great hall” and living quarters for the royal guests. King Henry V added a private retreat called the Pleasance situated outside and away from the main castle building. And about the mid 16th century, Elizabeth I gave the castle to Robert Dudley, earl of Leicester (believed to have the Queen’s favors). Dudley then proceeded to turn Kenilworth into a house of entertainment for the Queen which included a massive 19-day long festival during her visit in 1575. After the great civil war, Kenilworth’s fortifications were removed and “Leicester’s Gatehouse” was turned into a residence for a Parliamentary officer.

This is one castle tour that is significantly enhanced by using either the audio guide or the self-guided book. Because there were extensive expansions and contractions throughout the castles history, visitors will miss out on subtle nuances if simply left to roam. That said, there is so much to see and roam through that even an outing to just walk the surrounding marsh—the remains of the great lake—will give hours of enjoyment. “Leicester’s Gatehouse” has been restored and a guided tour (at timed intervals) is available (and highly recommended). Another portion of the courtyard restored is the stable. According to the guide, the stable was also used to train the Home guard during World War II and was used as a restaurant in the 1930s. Today, the Stable consists of a picturesque museum and a small café.

While some ruins can be enjoyed in a few hours, I would recommend reserving the better part of an afternoon to truly enjoy this great site. And, if you are lucky enough to have a clear sunny day, then I highly recommend staying around for the setting sun. Having been constructed with local sandstone materials, the castle glows a brilliant orange/red in the late setting sun and provides a truly spectacular vision.
