The German "Alte Mainbrücke" (pronounced pretty much as "mine-brueck-eh") is the old main bridge that leads into the city of Würzburg. I however like to think that it is named as such because of the river on which it stands (River Main). Whilst the Alte Mainbrücke gives you direct access into the old area of the city near to the town hall, there are also two larger bridges either side of it further along the river that also lead into the city (Friedensbrücke and Ludwigsbrücke) .The great thing about the Alte Mainbrücke however, is that no cars or trams run across it, unlike the other two bridges.

The Alte Mainbrücke is also the prettiest and most historically interesting bridge stretching over into the city. Irish monks Kilian, Totnan and Kolonat brought the christian teaching to Franconia as far back as the 7th century A.D. Martyred in year 689, the River Main has reached the halfway point to the Rhine when it flows past these three irish saints on the Alte Mainbrücke.

I walked across the bridge countless times as a student in Würzburg and so had the opportunity to admire it every day, without actually having known much about the history. However, as my interest of the city grew, I finally read a few chapters about it! I recommend taking a look at the bridge when you visit the city. In fact, I don't know of any tourist that would leave this out of their itinerary, it's just so lovely to see. At the same time, once you have seen it, there's little more else to say! Be sure to take your camera because the views up the hillside are fabulous and both the city's Chapel (Käppele) and Fortress (Festung Marienberg) can be viewed easily from here.

Do try to keep to the sides of the bridge when you are visiting. It is often very busy and there are a lot of people on bikes that wish to get past quickly. Just because they cling their bell, does not mean that they will slow down whilst peddling towards you at speed! There is a newly developed area just under the bridge where you can take a short stroll. As well as this, there is a cafe on the brdige where you can get an afternoon coffee and slice of cake. If you time it right, you may also be able to see the docks opening below as a larger boat passes through. This is nothing spectacular, but is just a nice way of seeing some active scenery. Whichever direction you look - left, right, up and even down, the Alte Mainbrücke is appealing to the eyes.
