San Juan Bautista Church: Iquitos' neo-Gothic San Juan Bautista Church

San Juan Bautista is the main catholic church of Iquitos, located prominently at Plaza d’Armas. It was inaugurated in 1919, but its construction was finished only in 1924, by the end of the rubber economical boom. It has an impressive 20 meters tall bell tower, used also in a famous scene of the movie “Fitzcarraldo”, by the German film-maker Werner Herzog, when Klaus Kinski climbs to its top.
The church was constructed in a neo-Gothic style. The interiors are quite serene; with soft curvature arches decorated blue ceilings. It is very well preserved, being part of Peru’s Cultural Historical Patrimony.
