Catedral dos Santos Anjos da Guarda: Tabatinga - Cathedral of the Franciscan Friars Minor Capuchin

The Alto Solimões Dioceses is located in Tabatinga. The Brazilians name the Amazon River as such only when the Solimões River mixes its waters with the Negro River, near Manaus. In Tabatinga you find the nice cathedral-church of the Saints Guardian Angels, which is run by the missionaries of the Franciscan Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. The Capuchin Friars have been in this part of the Amazon for 100 years, helping to build schools and churches.
Dating to the XVIII century, the oldest church of Tabatinga was located near the Portuguese Fort of São Francisco Xavier de Tabatinga, but it was destroyed by the river and jungle. The present church has a modern look with round colorful vitrals.
