Kiyomizu temple: Kiyomizu temple

You cannot go Kyoto without visiting the Kiyomizu- dera temple. A beautiful and very traditional world heritage site located about 15-20minutes ride away from Kyoto station. When travelling around Kyoto a very popular spot I would recommend purchasing a day bus pass. The cost is a mere 500yen for unlimited bus rides throughout the day. A single ride costs 220 yen.

The temple is located on a hill; I enjoyed the walk up the windup narrow street known as “Teapot lane” as I explored traditional shops and stalls selling all sorts of souvenirs and sweets as I approached the grand stairs leading to the entrance area. The cost is 300 yen for admission.

What’s special about Kiyomizu is that, not only is it beautifully setup with a culturally strong atmosphere but structurally not a single nail is used in this solid building. The veranda in the main hall exhibits a panoramic view of the spectacular city blended in with green mountains against the blue sky.

I walked down beneath the main hall into its surrounding nature where the main attraction is the Otowa waterfalls. Now Japanese believe that the water cascading from this waterfall is pure and has therapeutic properties. The water falls from three channels into a pond, each representing wisdom, life longevity and good health.

Without the crowds this place can be very romantic and tranquil, that would just depend on your luck. Peak times are of course spring (cherry blossom season), autumn (coloured leaves season) and summer and new years!
