Ice Bar Roma: Ice Ice baby!

The Ice Bar Roma is a cool little bar (excuse the pun!) a few minutes from the Colosseum in Rome. At the Ice Bar, everything is made from... ice, of course! The bar, the seats, the sculptures, the tables, chairs and even your glass. And of course like many other bars, they even serve ice cubes in the glass.

We visited here on an extremely hot and sticky summer evening in Rome. It was a fabulous way to cool down from the heat outside even if just for a short while. The entrance price to the bar is rather steep, at about 20€ including a drink. Each time you purchase a drink, the price gets cheaper. I believe it is something like 10€ for the second drink and then 5€ for each one after that. There are a variety of drinks on offer, but mainly cocktails, which are made up on the spot and are rather delicious.

The bar itself is very stylish, the whole place was carved by artists and is maintained at a chilly -5°. I was wearing open-top shoes and a summer shirt and even though they give you a protective cape to wear (to prevent "ice-burns!") it is only lined with a thin black fleece so I started to get rather cold after about 20 minutes.

The bar was empty when we first entered and so the atmosphere wasn't particularly great. Relaxing chillout music is played, but with not many people to talk to, we didn't feel like staying long.

Everything in the bar is maintained very well, even the toilets! (which are thankfully not made from ice!) Before leaving we took a few pictures of the interior, which is great to see even if to just appreciate the artisitc talent that has gone into the carvings. On heading out we were glad to be able to warm back up again, but it was a nice feeling to have the contrast of the icy -5° air with the humid 25° summer-night air all within one evening! An overall unusual, unique and interesting experience.
