Lamyatt: Lamyatt

The pretty Somerset town of Lamyatt (meaning lamb’s gate) is worth a detour if you are in the area as it has a lovely small village church and is the start of some great circular walks up Lamyatt Beacon, the distinctive wooded hill rising to the north of the village.

A Romano-British temple was found on the hill in the 50s and extensively excavated and I’m told that there’s not a great deal to now be seen above ground and it’s also very hard to find unless you know where to look.

The church of St Mary and St John is a quaint 13th century building and contains a large tapestry depicting local life and legend.

The village also has a cooperative producing local cider.
