Wales: The Taff Trail

The Taff Trail is a cycling and walking path that stretches from the Brecon Beacons to Cardiff Bay, passing though various Welsh villages, parklands, and over and alongside the River Taff.

During a recent trip to Cardiff, we took the opportunity of a fine day (a rare thing in the UK this summer) to walk and cycle a short section of the trail, from Cardiff city centre to Castle Coch. It seems that this was a popular idea – at least every few minutes we came across other people walking or cycling the trail, accompanied by pet dogs of all sizes.

Bike hire is available at a couple points along the trail. We hired ours from a caravan park in Pontcanna, paying £11.00 each for the day, plus a £20.00 deposit. There were shorter hiring periods available for cheaper rates, but since we intended to spend some time at the castle, the full day hire seemed the way to go.

Besides which, I’m not much of a cyclist, so I wasn’t going to get anywhere fast. And indeed, the last cycling tour I did, through the traffic-filled streets of Paris, left me vowing never to get on a bike again. Luckily most of the Taff Trail is ‘off-road’, and much of it is along flat concrete paths, which gave me the opportunity to regain a little of my confidence on two wheels.

That said, the last part of our journey to Castle Coch (an optional detour on the trail) was on roads that got progressively steeper, and I ended up pushing the bike most of the way up the hill and most of the way back down as well. Unless you’re a strong cyclist, I recommend looking for somewhere safe to chain up your bike in the village of Tongwynlais, and then walking up the hill.

For most of the ride to the castle, I was concentrating so hard on the steering of the bicycle that I didn’t get much chance to look around. However on the way back, I managed to relax a bit more, and take in the countryside – the greenery, the river, the small towns and the sports fields – and, in a way, this time, even though my muscles ached, I was sad to give back my bike.
