Cardiff Hostel: Cardiff Backpacker Hostel

A piece of advice: if you’re thinking of spending a weekend in Cardiff, it might pay to check that there’s not a major international rugby game on first. Otherwise when it comes to trying to find accommodation, even if you’re looking several weeks before you travel, you might wonder why almost everything seems to be booked out or why the prices of those few rooms available seemed to have almost doubled from the weekend before.

We found out about Cardiff Backpacker Hostel online. The website said that they had no availability, but we’ve learnt before that it pays to give them a ring regardless. We did, and they had one private room left for the weekend – and while the price was a little more expensive than we would’ve expected to pay at a hostel, it was much cheaper than the surrounding B&Bs. We took it.

Cardiff Backpacker Hostel is a distinctive purple and yellow building, located on the corner Neville Street and Neville Place. It’s a short walk across the River Taff from Cardiff’s main attractions (such as the Millennium Stadium and Cardiff Castle) as well as its central bus and train stations.

When we arrived, we were provided with a map of Cardiff and the friendly girl behind the counter was well-versed in what to see and do in the city. There was also whiteboard with local gigs and events, and each table in the bar had a blue folder which gave more information about local highlights and how to get to them.

This is a hostel which caters well for its market. There’s a bar. There’s a lounge with coin-operated internet computers, a pool table and a huge DVD collection. There’s a sun deck with a barbeque and two hammocks. And there’s also a small shop onsite where you can buy the things you’ve forgotten to bring – in our case, toothpaste and toothbrushes.

Free tea and coffee is provided all day, and when we checked the kitchen at breakfast-time on Sunday, we were invited to help ourselves to croissants, bread and a range of jams.

Our room was pretty basic, just containing a double bunk bed (double bed on the bottom; single on the top), a wardrobe and a couple of mirrors. However, with so many other places to relax and meet people elsewhere in the hostel, and so much to see in our short time in Cardiff, we didn’t spend much time in our room anyway.

Checkout was at 11am, but the hostel staff were happy to store our bags behind the counter (free of charge) while we did some last minute sightseeing before catching an afternoon bus back to London.
