Dorchester: Dorchester

The bustling market town of Dorchester in Dorset is perhaps most famous for its connection with the Victorian novelist Thomas Hardy who immortalised the town (and many of its buildings) as the fictional Casterbridge. There are numerous plaques detailing Hardy around the town centre and a hilltop memorial to the author lies several miles to the west.

Beyond this Dorchester is a pleasant and friendly place to explore with strong links to its Roman past. You can walk around the old city walls, learn about the history of the Tolpuddle martyrs, there’s an attractive park with a well equipped children’s play area and even a museum to Tutankhamen!
