East Knoyle: East Knowle and Sir Christopher Wren

The small Wiltshire town of East Knowle is easy to miss. A fast A-road (the A350) carries you past but it’s worth the five minute detour if you have the time since, in addition to being a pleasant little place with thatched cottages and a solid-looking church, it’s was also the birthplace of the famous architect Sir Christopher Wren in 1632, best remembered for St Paul’s Cathedral in London.

The house in which Wren was born no longer exists but a commemorative plaque at the centre of the town marks the spot and there’s also a shop selling Wren-related souvenirs and providing more information about his connection with this quiet corner of rural England.

There’s a pretty parish church a short walk up from the Wren shop.
