Wellingborough: Wellingborough

Wellingborough in Northamptonshire is a pretty normal English town with all the usual facilities that you’d expect for a population of about 45,000. It makes a good base for exploring the local area (like the scenic town of Olney nearby) but is worth a half day itself.

It was a centre of shoe manufacture in the 19th century and there is a small town museum dealing with the history and development of the area.

There’s also a cinema and theatre and the town’s shopping centre – the Swangate Centre.

The town was the subject of an April Fool’s prank in 1959 when white footprints were painted along the main street with the words “I Must Fly!” at the end.
