St Peter & St Paul: "Amazing Grace"

The parish church of St Peter & St Paul in Olney, Buckinghamshire is synonymous with the life and work of one of its most famous Ministers, John Newton. Newton was an 18th century slave ship Captain who converted to Christianity and is best remembered as the author of the hymn “Amazing Grace”.

The church has some excellent information about Newton and his ministry in the area and his pulpit is on display. There are also three stained glass panels celebrating the church’s connection with him.

His tomb (and that of his wife and her father) can also be visited in the churchyard – the remains were moved here from London when Bank station was built!

There is also a museum dedicated to Newton (and his close friend, the poet William Cowper) in the market place of Olney some 5 minute walk from the church.
