More fearsome than a herd of elephants stampeding over the hills is a screaming mass of children diving to the floor as thousands of sweets are being thrown into the crowds at Garrucha fishing village. Welcome to the Three Kings Festival, (Fiesta de los Reyes) yet another wonderful Spanish fiesta. This one is to commemorate the three kings visiting the new born Christ. Parades are held annually in every town and village across Spain on the 5th January - the eve of the Epiphany.

There was a wonderful atmosphere in the harbour as families gathered round to watch the three kings arrive by fishing boat. Then a few fireworks announced the start of the parade (the fireworks weren’t all that spectacular, but that may have something to do with the global financial meltdown). The kings climbed on their own floats and were paraded through the village for about 45 minutes, during which time they threw thousands of sweets out to the crowds. Amazingly they didn’t run out.

Some enterprising parents brought along umbrellas and turned them upside down so as to catch as many sweets as possible, and it was a common site to see two adults holding a coat or blanket between them to ensure that they finished the evening with a massive hoard of sweets.

I managed to get about two chocolates, which was a dismal performance. I was beaten at nearly every turn by children who were all practised in the art of following the trajectories of the sweets. And they were much quicker on their feet than me.

Maybe next year I’ll bring along an over-sized golfing umbrella. That should do the trick.

Great write-up Paul. Sounds like a festival worth seeing. I like the umbrella idea!
