When we first started researching our visit to Ephesus almost every website and book we looked at had a picture of the Library of Celsus. But it was even more impressive when we finally saw it for ourselves. It had been beautifully restored and you can see much of the original detail on the facade and some of the statues in the walls. When the library was built in the 2nd century it was one of the largest of its time and stored up to 12,000 scrolls. It was built by Julius Aquila for his father and as well as a library it was also a place for his father to be buried in, which according to our guide would have been a special honour at the time.
