Großbritannien: The post

Since I’ve been travelling, most of my contact with home has been via phone or email. Quick. Cheap. And perhaps, these days, also more reliable than snail mail. However, I still think it’s nice to send a letter home now and then, or to receive something through my door flap that isn’t junk mail or a gas bill.

In fact, that’s one of the first things I noticed about London – there don’t seem to be any letterboxes here. Mail comes through a flap in your door, and if it doesn’t fit through, I get a red Royal Mail slip saying that I’ll need to pick it up later from the local delivery office. If you don’t have an address of your own, I’ve been told you can have people send your mail to a UK post office marked ‘to be called for’, where you can then pick it up. Might be worth checking with the particular post office first though to see if they offer this service.

If you already have stamps, you can post your mail in any of the iconic red post boxes that you’ll see on street corners all around London. I’ve noticed that most of these have collection times on them – and if the one you’ve chosen doesn’t have collection on a certain day (eg. Sundays) they’ll give the street address of one that does.

Postage rates are dependent on the weight of what you’re sending, where you’re sending it to, and how quickly you want to get it there. First class mail prices are upwards from 34p for a small letter sent within the UK; second class from 24p. These stamps can often be bought at chemists and convenience stores, as well as from vending machines outside some post offices. A stamp for a postcard to New Zealand at the moment costs 54p. Of course, mail prices tend to change all the time, so its best to ask at a post office or check the Royal Mail website.

When you’re not sure how much it will cost to send a letter/package, the best idea is to take it along to the post office. There, the staff with check its weight and size, and give you the correct stamps. However, if you’re in central London, it’s often best not to visit the post office between 12 and 2pm. There’s sure to be an orderly queue, but unfortunately that queue may stretch right out the door and it’ll take half an hour or more to get to the counter!

And of course, there are the red mail vans here. And every time, I see one on the roads, the Postman Pat song gets stuck in my head for hours. I blame 80s children’s TV.
