A 36-minute train ride north of Copenhagen, the trek out to the Louisiana Museum takes you through some some beautiful areas of Denmark on the Zealand Coast. It's a great break from city life and gives you a picture of the coastal towns of the country (yes, they have those). When you think Louisiana, you probably don't think clean Danish town, slick architecture, and top-of-the-line modern art. But despite its name, there is nothing remotely bayou about this haven. And if you have your International Student ID, you'll get in for 80 Crowns rather than 90 Crowns. That's roughly $15.00 instead of $18.00. And while for some of you that's worth a night at your hostel plus dinner and a beer, think of it as a cultural exposition--not to mention one cheap day trip.

Most likely you'll be traveling by train, so at the station ask for Kystbanen. After a half hour or so, it'll be a 10-minute walk from Humlebæk/Louisiana Station. Now's a great time to be on the Zealand Coast for a few reasons. Firstly, Denmark in winter is beautiful in areas beyond the city and nothing beats running into a modern art museum to dodge the cold. Secondly, they have two amazing exhibitions up now that are due to close in the New Year. Over 250 Richard Avedon portraits are on display now through January 13th. The first retrospective of the photographer since his death in 2004, the stark black and white portraits of faces both familiar and not-so-much are beautifully arranged and make you look at those MySpace self portraits a bit differently.

Moving from photographic figures to painted figures, the work of Lucian Freud has earned the artist the title of the most important living figurative artist. He's kind of a big deal (people know him). And for good reason. The portraiture of Freud is realistic but with an artistic edge that is both soothing and radical; somewhat apropos for the grandson of Sigmund (yes, that Freud). He brings an honesty to his subjects that make you see the raw emotion behind the people on canvas, and it's really freaking exciting. While the Freud exhibition closes on the 27th of January, you may want to time your visit to see both his works and Avedon's in the same day. Two different artists who both worked in the 20th Century, they complement each other nicely (think a cinnamon latte and a gingerbread scone...or a big German beer and a soft-baked pretzel).
