Statens Museum for Kunst: SMK

The happening Danish art scene doesn't just lie outside of Copenhagen, and thanks to the Statens Museum for Kunst (Public Museum of Art), you can enjoy the classics alongside modern masterpieces. In and of itself, the building is a work of art. Part late-19th Century grandeur, part modern dramatic minimalism, the museum (which has always been short on space) received two important face-lifts, the most recent one in 1998. The dramatic glass-roofed Sculpture Street links the two buildings, with footbridges connecting the first floors.

And if you can get past all of that, there's art to be seen (1600 works, to be exact). The Danish--and especially those who run the SMK--are passionate about their art. They also love to mix it up, and therefore you'll see a Picasso next to a Rembrandt and, more importantly, the similarities that connect the two. You'll also see a lot of modern art in the older wing and most of the old masters in the contemporary wing. Madness. And if you love the behind-the-scenes stuff, you'll love what's going on up in room 272. The museum has opened up the room to both a team of conservators and you, cher public, to the restoration of a Jacob Jordaens masterpiece. The process started in September and is expected to last at least ten months, but if your plans for that time don't include a trip to the big C, you can check out virtual updates on their website.

For those of you who are celebrating the winter solstice in Denmark, however, the Statens Museum has some extra ways to enjoy the silver white winter. A Mirror of Nature runs through January 20th and features over 100 examples of Nordic landscape paintings. Now before you roll your eyes at landscapes, check out the catalogue, which is neatly broken down down by theme and includes both the traditional and the abstract varieties. You'll never look at a snow-covered hill the same way again. And with an artist roster that includes Edvard Munch, Vilhelm Hammershoi, Carl Larsson and Akseli Gallen-Kallela, that's a great excuse to stay inside on a wintery day.

Did I mention the entry fees? That's because there aren't any.
