Abbey Theatre: Abbey Theatre

Next week will mark the 203rd birthday of Ireland's national theatre, The Abbey. Founded in 1904 (December 27th, to be exact), The Abbey had some of Ireland's greatest names behind it from its inception, including founding members Lady Gregory and W.B. Yeats. Running strong and in the spirit of celebrating theatre (presumably thanks to the nearby Guinness Factory...), The Abbey has fostered the careers of a veritable who's who of Irish playwrights, including Brendan Benhan, George Bernard Shaw, and Samuel Beckett.

Each year at The Abbey is a delightful mix of old and contemporary works with a focus on both Irish and European/American playwrights. 2008 is no exception to this rule, and the season will include Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Seamus Heaney's The Burial at Thebes, Chekhov's Three Sisters, Oscar Wilde's An Ideal Husband, and Sam Shepard's Fool For Love. Currently running is the last slot of 2007, George Farquhar's The Recruiting Officer. It's a delightful 18th Century comedy that only the Brits or the Irish could pull off; two parts hansome grenadiers, one part wily sergeant, one part feisty heroine, one art jealous cousin, one part over-protective father, shaken into an army recruitment drive and garnished with a large inheritance.

And if that sounds better to you than an evening of sampling pints (although you're more than welcome do drink before/afterwards and may even run into an actor or two), there are some great ticket deals to be had. You can nab a great ticket for 20 Euro, however if you're looking to see a show Monday through Thursday (re: not the weekend rush), you can aim for a ticket for 14 Euro (think student and senior discounts or a really convincing story, or being unemployed or a member of Actor's Equity). What I prefer to do, though (and while it's too late for this show's run you can make it work all next year) is buy tickets for the show while in previews. 14 Euro will get you in regardless of age or occupation and you can enjoy the performance BEFORE all of the critical hype. Which is par for the course here.
