Because it's winter and because Iceland is now seeing roughly four hours of sun daily, we know you want to go to Reykjavik right now. Actually, it's a surprisingly beautiful city nestled within a surprisingly beautiful country, regardless of the time of year. And if you really get the wintertime blues, take comfort in two things: Brennevin Vodka (also known as "Black Death"), and the National Gallery of Iceland. Perhaps the lightest part of the capital city is this white-washed building that holds incredibly atmospheric art.

This includes works from the collection of Markus Ívarsson, which runs now through February 10th. A blacksmith by trade, Ívarsson is somewhat synonymous with the NGI after he donated his extensive collection of Icelandic and Scandinavian artists whose works are at once moody, bright, vibrant, and reminiscent of their mainland contemporaries (check out the similarities between Gunnar Gunnarsson and Vincent van Gogh). Also be sure to check out Katrín Sigurðardóttir's "High Plane IV," an excellent excuse to take a self-portrait). And with admission free, that'll leave you with plenty krona to spare for a shot of Brennevin on your way home.
