Werkspoormuseum Stork: Het Concertgebouw

There are many things I love about Amsterdam, and they don't stop at wooden shoes, cheap ballet tickets, and bicycle rides to the nearest coffee shop. For a city that, unlike many of its European capital counterparts, did not have a huge Baroque-a-rama or eight opera houses or even a few hundred powdered wigs (its royal delicacy for a while was tulips, believe it or not), the city has a thriving classical music district (and art scene, but more on that later). And those Dutch want you to have cheap cultural thrills as much as they want you to have legal soft drugs and prostitutes, apparently.

One of the best places to check out for a music fix is Het Concertgebouw. Here you'll find not only classical musicians, but also world and jazz. And these musicians are culled from the whole world over, so don't be surprised if, as a New Yorker, you end up seeing the Juilliard Quartet here while on holiday. Concertgebouw loves discounts so much, in fact, they have devoted an entire section of its website to the various ways you can get in for little to no (yes, no) Euro. If you planning on spending a long time in Amsterdam (say, eight months to a year) and want to fill your live music sweet tooth significantly while there, it's worth forking out the 25 Euro to become a Friend of the Concertgebouw. For that annual fee, you'll not only get a kick out of being a patron of the arts and helping young artists, you'll also get access to rehearsals, backstage tours, trips out to such cities as Antwerp and Cologne (for a nominal fee, of course), but you'll also be able to buy concert tickets for just 5 Euro. If you're 27 and under, you can join Friends, but you can also join a similar (though independent) program called Entree that allows for discounts both here and at the Royal Concertgebouw (yes, they're different). 27-and-under year-old travelers can also sprint for seats that are just 7.50 Euros 45 minutes before each show with the orchestra's Sprint Seat deal.

Now if you remember from the last time I extolled the praises of cheap seats in Amsterdam, you'll remember CJP. It's back here, and you can use it for equally cheap seats. But the best way to see a concert at Het Concertgebouw? Is still to see it for free. That's right, free. Every Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:00, the orchestra plays a free concert which is often a rehearsal for that evening's performance. These concerts run from September to June (the cultural season), and tickets are available the morning of. Sweet-sounding, no?
