Museu da Fundação Medeiros e Almeida: Fundacao Medeiros e Almeida

Lisbon is one of the cheapest capitals in Europe that has already switched to the Euro. It's also the closest capital to the United States and has a lot going for it in terms of local charm that has yet to be corrupted by TGI McDisney's. Growing up in a heavily Portugese area, I was for a time the only person in some of my high school classes who had yet to go to Portugal, however if nothing else I recommend for its artwork, its champagne, and its fado. The museums aren't a bad deal, either.

If you ask a guidebook, you'll soon be directed to the Berardo and the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum. If you ask a Lisboa, however, their number one stop on a museum tour of the city (a city that cultivated and connected so many cultures) is the Fundacao Medeiros e Almeida. Once owned by uber-rich Antonio de Medeiros e Almeida, the museum is in its namesake's former home and houses what was his private collection. And we're not just talking painted tile here; next to the Armenian native Calouste Gulbenkian, Medeiros e Almeida was the biggest patron of the arts in Portugal. Period, exclamation point. (And this wasn't too far off, either; he passed away in 1986 at the tender age of 91). He set up the Fundacao Medeiros e Almeida despite what would become a precarious financial situation in his later years in order to protect some of the most important Portugese art as well as selections from the French, British, Italian, and Flemish masters. The real stars, however, are pieces from the Han and Qin dynasties, gilded bronze wall fountains from Versailles, and objects that once belonged to Napoleon. Not bad for a city that's a pretty cheap date.

General admission here is 5 Euro, however if you can pull yourself out of bed early on a Saturday morning, you can get in for free between 10 am and 1 pm (that is, so long as you enter by 1:00, it's free). And since so few know about this hidden gem, it'll be much easier for you to pretend this is your own little pied-a-terre.
