Opernhaus Zürich: Tonhalle Orchester

Seeing a classical concert in Zurich is like sitting inside a jeweled-out music box. Being in Zurich in general is like being in a jewel box (complete with chocolates and speedy, organized public transportation system), but seeing a concert becomes a multi-sensory experience.

Tonhalle is the best place to catch a concert with a classical bent. This includes either the straight version (with such famed conductors as Sir Neville Mariner), or experimental--that is, classical tempered with techno or electronic music. Currently, the Tonhalle Orchester is in the house and bringing the beats of Schumann, Schubert, Bach, and Carter. Now the issue with the Swiss Franc is that while the exchange rate is slightly in the favor of the dollar (currently 1 CHF runs for about 0.89 cents in the US), the prices still break things even--if not more expensive. Fortunately, ticket prices haven't taken that route. You can get a nice seat for $20 USD. And if you really want to count your Francs (and upgrade your seat), and are either 25 and under or a holder of disability insurance, you can get tickets for a mere 20 CHF (that's roughly $17 USD). Starting Monday, you can purchase tickets for the week through Sunday at the box office.

Tonhalle Orchester has also been famous in the recording world (they've recorded all nine of Beethoven's symphonies and can be heard on disc), which is a great way to gear up for a night out. These are serious musicians with a serious love for both music and fun, and whether you know Beethoven from Bach from Berlioz, the energy is addictive.
