Metropolitan Museum of Art: The One Dollar Wonder

Codpieces, unicorns, an annual Angel Tree, old Greeks and Romans, a
hidden Venetian hotel room, an obscenely large Brueghel, rooftop
gardens, and probably a few hundred gallons of paint stretched out
onto canvas, wood, paper, and just about every other surface
imaginable (fine, a few thousand gallons if you count the actual paint
they used on the walls). The Metropolitan Museum of Art is a haven in
New York in many ways. It's a reason to visit the Upper East Side
(home to New York's finest real estate brokers and hedge fund moguls
and really good Jewish delis), it's a fun way to spend a chilly or
rainy afternoon, it's huge which allows for repeated viewings and an
even disbursement of tourist congestion, and sometimes it just feels
like nothing else you've ever seen.

The building itself is stunning. Huge, dominating Fifth Avenue along
most of the East 80s, it's hard to miss. It has great views of the
park, a set of steps that are great for sitting on while noshing on a
pretzel from one of the nearby carts, and its opulence, detail, and
grandeur are a pure joygasm for those of you who are into that sort of
thing.

While it is possible—and fun—to make this a day trip (especially if
your time in New York is limited), I'm a big fan of doing the Met in
bits and pieces. If you're staying in the area (or even on the Upper
West Side, which is just a crosstown bus ride away), pop in for a few
hours each day. The admission rates are suggested, and if you're
saving your pennies, just give them a dollar or a fistful of pocket
change each time you come in. They appreciate the donation and never
hold it against you. Buy a sketchbook and some pencils and sit in the
statue garden. Go upstairs and find the reconstructed baroque and
classical rooms. Enjoy the setting for the Medieval wing (stone floors
and stained glass windows). Take in the recently renovated Greek and
Roman wing. Giggle at the knight's costumes with extended codpieces.
On a nice day, go up to the rooftop and check out the gallery work
there as well as the impressive views of the city. The Egyptian wing
is great for kids, the café that sells wine and yummy pastries with a
stunning glass window is great for adults. If the whole thing seems
daunting, find an area that would suit you best and just go there (no
grand exploration necessary here). And you definitely will get your
dollar's worth.
