Robin Hood’s Bay is a beautiful, scenic stretch of coastline to the south of Whitby and well worth a detour if you’re visiting the area.

The main attraction is “Bay Town” itself which is an attractive muddle of narrow lanes and sea views. There’s a car park on the top of the hill before the town to prevent congestion (good views out over the bay) but be warned that it’s a steep walk down and back up again.

On the road between the car park and the town is a plaque recording the fact that in 1881 200 men pulled the Whitby lifeboat across to the bay in deep snow drifts to rescue the crew of a shipwrecked brig.

Note that the bay has no known connection with Robin Hood of Sherwood forest fame!

Hunting around the web there seems to be no conclusive answer - the best story (from http://www.bayfair.co.uk/page4.html) is that Robin Hood used to keep a couple of boats here for a quick getaway in case the Sheriff caught up with him. Looks like the name is a product of local folklore though :)
