Oriental Theatre: Oriental - Entertaining and Fun

This historical theater was originally opened to the public in 1927. The Oriental is one of Milwaukee's last remaining movie palaces…and it truly is a palace with larger than life gold Buddha’s which line the walls and oriental rugs and drapery hang from ceilings and lay on floors. The décor theme is East Indian, with no Chinese or Japanese art in sight. There is also a stage where you once saw live performances here. However, the only “live” performance that can be seen here is known as the “Rocky Horror Picture Show” once a month.

Like it’s sister theater, the films shown here are independent films and foreign cinemas.
Ticket prices are $9.00 general, $6.50 bargain (Mon-Fri all shows before 6pm. And Sat and Sun, first show of the day), $6.50 Seniors and children, $7.50 Student.

This classic cult film can be seen at the Oriental Theater the second Saturday of the month at midnight and has done so since 1978….and let me say I have never seen anything like it before. The movie plays while cast members (Sensual Daydreams) act out the film in front of the movie screen in full costume. The night begins outside the doors of the Oriental as groups gather dressed in their best Rocky gear….men dressed as women, blacks and reds, lots of skin, and down right funny (as Rocky Horror is). Once inside, don’t expect the show to begin immediately…oh no. The cast works hard at pleasing their audience with different shows including skits done in lingerie, dancing in an enlarged panda bear outfit…pretty much anything you can think of. And if you’re a Rocky Horror virgin…don’t be afraid to throw up your hand when they ask to have you join them on stage…you’ll find yourself in your skinny’s with a red butt next to cast members dressed in leather.

Once the show finally begins (about 1:30am), not only will you see Sensual Daydreams cast members acting out the film in perfect unison to the film, but you will also see plenty of audience participation…rice being thrown, what seems to be practiced words and rhetoric being yelled at the stage/screen, and everyone gets up to dance the Time Warp.

In all, the night is long, it’s a little expensive, and you can’t bring alcoholic inside the facility (but you can drink while waiting in line for an hour). Regardless, it’s interesting…something I have never experienced before and good to laugh at (really at other people, not the show itself). If you’ve got the time and looking for a new experience, I suggest it…otherwise not.
