Playa del Carmen: 5th Avenue: Shopping and Food

The restaurants along 5th Avenue seemed to be mostly Italian, but there were a few Mexican or American-Mexican restaurants located off the street. The ambience varies from place to place….romantic, party, high-class…you can find pretty much anything you’re looking for. Prices vary depending upon where you go. However, you will find the best Mexican restaurants located off 5th Avenue, the food is fantastic and far cheaper than what is on 5th. You will be walking 10 plus blocks to find these places though…but honestly they are well worth it.

5th Avenue or Avenida 5 is by far a tourist zone. It is the main street in Playa del Carmen that runs parallel with the ocean with motorized traffic being forbidden. Between the street and the beach lies an area filled with hotels and resorts, restaurants, bars, art galleries, and various shops. It is sometimes called "Playa del Carmen's Pedestrian Walkway.”

There are plenty of shops to suite anyone’s needs including rum stores, clothing boutiques (including the hottest European trends…the Mexicans in this area are on top of fashion), craft/art galleries, jewelry (both bargain-able and high-end), stores selling coffee and honey, cuban cigar shops, and so much more. 5th Avenue is quite a bustling area and is as good for people watching as it is for shopping. The atmosphere is colorful, trying hard to reflect the Mayan culture, which causes it to look much like a carnival. Although this is a tourist area, it is definitely worth stopping through. It’s just a really fun area.
