Colline du Chateau: Ruins, Views, and Beauty

This is quite a large hill separating the Port of Nice from Old Town Nice. This is probably the reason the ancient Greeks selected this area when they founded the city, as it is a great strategic defense against opposing armies coming ashore, particularly the Romans. The hill was named after the Greek Goddess Nike, goddess of victory. The ruins of Nike can be visited here as well as providing a beautiful panoramic view of Old Town and Port of Nice and the Mediterranean Sea. There are only a few sections of the castle that remain…but if you’re a fan of Greek and Roman archaeology, you will enjoy it.

Apparently there is an elevator…which I wasn’t aware of. I randomly found the brick steps that lead you to the top…and it is quite the hike. However, with all the stopping for photo moments, it didn’t seem all that bad.

We had an entire day to burn…and burn we did when visiting this area. I don’t think we would have had enough time to see everything and take our time the way we did if we had other plans/events for the day. In fact, we took winding roads and somehow got lost among private yards and driveways…oops.

I did find the graveyard to be, not only peaceful, but absolutely stunning and majestic. You can see that it is centuries old with uniquely sculptured mausoleums and headstones. The graveyard seemed to be separated by religion, Christian on one side, Jewish on the other. However, both were beautiful in architecture, design, and artwork. You’ll see rows of sculpture and headstones, each unique, each peaking the curiosity for those you lay below.
