Fish Fry’s on Friday nights are not only a staple in Milwaukee, but a Wisconsin tradition. Now you’re asking yourself…where do I go to get one of these amazing and tasty fish fry’s?…with so many places to choose from, it’s hard to pick just one place. Well, here’s a compilation of the best fish fry’s in the city. However, because there are so many around the city, I’m going to focus on the best fry’s on the Eastside and downtown areas.
Lakefront Brewery Palm Garden
1872 N. Commerce St.
(414) 273-8300
By far my FAVORITE fish fry! And I say this hands down. The Palm Garden offers a choice of cod, perch, bluegill, tilapia, shrimp, or evena combo platter and a choice of French fries or potato pancakes, cole slaw, applesauce and rye bread, from 4 until 9 p.m. And not only do you receive a delicious meal…but great entertainment by a local polka band throughout the duration of dinner. I recommend taking a tour of the brewery and sitting down to dinner with a little dancing.
Café Hollander
2608 N. Downer Ave.
(414) 963-6366
A great fish fry choice, with ale-battered cod and golden frites with your choice of dipping sauce. What’s really great about Café Hollander’s fry…it’s available every day of the week….which takes the pressure off your Friday night hunger.
Hi-Hat
1701 N. Arlington Pl.
(414) 225-9330
I’m actually making a note of this place not because of it’s tasty fish fry…but to say how non-tasty it is. I found there to be far more breading than cod (and the breading was very chewy), and the portions far too small for the price. Their description of the meal sounds absolutely delicious…. Spotted Cow tempura-battered cod, Asian slaw, marble rye, pomme frites and caper aioli…but I was very very disappointed.
Buck Bradley's
1019 N. Old World 3rd St.
(414) 224-8500
This place is easy….your choice of baked or breaded cod fish fry, great sides and one of the longest bars east of the Mississippi.
Harry's Bar & Grill
3549 N. Oakland Ave., Shorewood
(414) 964-6800
A popular East Side spot that offers beer-battered walleye, seasoned fries, rye bread, cole slaw and several Friday specials.
Historic Turner Restaurant
1034 N. 4th St.
(414) 276-4844
Right across from the Bradley Center, Turner -- which also hosts concerts in its large ballroom -- serves up a cod fry as good as you can get. Potato pancakes are a little extra, but rate very high.
Slim’s
338 S 1st St
(414) 271-7546
Choose between the fish fry dinner and sandwich. Either come with your choice of a potato, cole slaw, and rye bread. I’d eat here again in a heart beat…and I have.
Hooligan’s Supper Club
2017 E North Ave
(414) 273-5230
You will never…I repeat…never find a bad fish fry at a Supper Club, and Hooligan’s isn’t any different. Beautifully breaded cod, potato pancakes, cole-slaw, and rye bread finish this dinner off perfectly.
