Victoria Coach Station: Victoria Coach Station

Victoria Coach Station was our first port of call in London. We arrived there at the end of a long day: we’d caught the bus from Paris to Calais, where we went through customs and got interrogated about out UK intentions, then caught a ferry to Dover, then got back on the bus, which was behind schedule by that time, and then the bus driver managed to hit a taxi as we went around a roundabout which delayed things further… All and all, it was a pretty stressful time. Also stressful was the fact that I didn’t know what to expect when we arrived.

So, in the interests of assisting others, I present my ‘Top five things I wish I had known before we arrived at Victoria Coach Station’.

1. It’s not the same as Victoria Underground Station. You can’t just get off your bus and get on the tube. There’s only a few stops between the two locations, but it pays to look for and follow the signs otherwise you could end up walking in the wrong direction entirely. Victoria Coach Station is at 164 Buckingham Palace Road; Victoria Underground Station has entrances on Victoria Street and Terminus Place.

2. There are phones in the arrival area. These were particularly useful when the international roaming on my mobile doesn’t work the way I thought it would, and I was still meant to be ringing ahead to announce our (later-than-anticipated) arrival in the UK.

3. There were ATMs at the coach station, which meant I could withdraw my first British Pounds from my already-suffering New Zealand bank account.

4. There’s also a left luggage area (I didn’t discover this until we picked a friend up from the station six months later). It costs about £3.50 to leave a backpack there for up to 24 hours. If I had known that facility was available beforehand, I think we might have left our luggage there, rather than trying to squeeze both our huge backpacks onto the crowded tubes.

5. Hundreds of people arrive at Victoria Coach station each day – from around the UK, as well as from overseas. So there are signs. There are taxi services available. And while, I’m sure the staff must get sick of answering questions from first-timers such as myself, the ones I spoke to were knowledgeable about the area and able to quickly point me in the right direction.
