Heceta Head Lightkeeper's House: Lightkeeper's House Worth a Look

The white and red Queen Anne-style Lightkeeper's House stands out amidst a dense forest about halfway up the bluff. With such a contrast to the surrounding dark greens, grays, and browns of the rock and forest, standing at the parking lot below your eye is drawn here as much as it is to the lighthouse itself. The climb to the Keeper's House is fairly short and quite an easy hike. There are a few small streams along the way that attracted our children's interest and the walk through the forest itself is peaceful, with several nice views of the ocean and beach below.

Upon arriving, we were treated to a gorgeous view of the ocean, river, and shoreline as well as the beauty of the well-maintained grounds. The Lightkeeper's House currently serves as a bed and breakfast, but it is also a National Historic Place so it is open to the public in the form of free tours. Though the tour was short and did not include any of the upstairs, we enjoyed it immensely. The tour guide was quite knowledgeable about both the area and the history of the lighthouse.

Tours are offered from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend on Tuesdays through Saturdays from 12 noon to 5 p.m.
