Adelphi Theatre: 'Joseph' at the Adelphi Theatre

The first time I visited London’s West End, I was blown away by the number of theatres. It seemed that every time I walked down a new street, I saw new billboard, a new glittering sign, a new kiosk selling cut price tickets.

Earlier in the year, the BBC screened a reality TV show where Andrew Lloyd Webber, three judges, and all those voting at home, cast the lead of the new West End Production of ‘Joseph and the Technicolour Dreamcoat’. This week, at the Adelphi Theatre, we got to see the winner, Lee Mead, take on the role.

The Adelphi theatre is located in the Strand, not far from the Embankment Underground and Charing Cross Train Stations. There are lots of restaurants, pubs and fast food outlets nearby if you want to grab a meal before or after the show.

I was surprised to find that the Adelphi Theatre was relatively small inside, with it’s seats spread over three levels – stalls, dress circle and the upper circle. That said, it was full, and before the show and during interval there were long lines for the souvenir shop, snacks/drinks kiosk and women’s toilets!

We had seats in row N of the stalls, but the floor didn’t have much of an incline, so even that far back we were only on about the same height as the stage, and I had to lean to one side to look around the head of the person in front of me. Attached to the backs of the seats were pairs of binoculars that you could hire for 50 pence. I’m not sure if they were also available at the back seats of the upper circle, but they’d probably be more useful up there.

While lacking a bit in the plot and character development department, the show itself was a spectacle of coloured costumes and lights, with songs that I’m still humming now.
