Panthéon: The Pantheon

The Pantheon, in the heart of the Latin Quarter, is instantly recognized from its huge cupola, which rises up from the mont Sainte-Geneviève and can be seen from all over Paris. This masterpiece of neo-classical architecture was originally built as a church, but during the Revolution it was turned into a mausoleum to inter the bodies of great Frenchmen. Voltaire, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Victor Hugo, and Emile Zola are among the famous French authors buried in the Pantheon. After you have visited the tombs and plaques commemorating great French heroes and literary figures, you can also see Foucalt’s pendulum, with which physicist Léon Foucalt demonstrated the rotation of the earth by hanging the 67 meter long pendulum under the main dome of the Pantheon.
