The Arms of Australia Inn Museum in Emu Plains, NSW, Australia is going to be giving re-enactment demonstration on July 20th. The NSW Marine Corps will be on hand to keep order and augmented by a French Military unit. They will give a glimpse into what it was like in the days of the First Fleet. I watched these guys at Ironfest and interviewed a few of the soldiers. They are the best thing to authentic and a joy to talk to and watch. Activities start at 9:30am.
Other events of the day will include Thomas the Tank Engine, trampoline bungee jumping, merry-go-round, animals to cuddle, jumping castle and face painting. There will be plenty of bush tucker to go around as well as music, stalls and all kinds of displays. Take the time to see the historical structures and displays to learn a bit of local history. Play historical games, see the old fashioned school house and enter the tug-of-war competition against the re-enactors.
The Arms of Australia Inn was a road side Inn dating back to 1826 and is now home to the Nepean District Historical Society. It was became the home of Arthur Judges, who in 1924 decided that Australian history needed to be collected for future generations to behold. The Society took five years to restore the Inn, but the efforts were worth it. It is just a wonderful as if the years had never touched her. They have also built an old slab barn that would have been used in the 1880s.
The museum holds thousands of artefacts and photos of the district. There are lots of hands on displays to get a feel for equipment long made obsolete. There is an old gramophone, a 1920s switchboard, hand cranked phones, etc. Admission is $3.00.
The society conducts walking and bus tours around the area if you want to learn more. They can be tailored to your group for full or half days with lunch at the Historic Log Cabin Motor Inn or Leonay Golf Club. There is also Lantern and Twilight Tours every second Wednesday and twilight tours in summer for groups of 10 or more at 7pm. Admission $10 for adults and $5 for kids.
Historical Books and framed photo reproductions are for sale at the Inn if you want to take a bit home with you.
There are outdoor areas with tables and log chairs and a concrete apron for a BBQ. The grounds can be hired for $10-$15 per hour for special events. Weddings are $66 for outdoors and grounds, $132 for full use of grounds and buildings. Photos can be arranged with the two horse drawn wagons being moved to the middle of the grounds to capture a great memory.
They are open Wednesday and Thursday from 10:00-2:00 and Sunday from 1:00-5:00. Other times can be arranged for bookings if needed.
This re-enactment event is being held to celebrate the day William Cox started the road across the Blue Mountains in 1814.
