Portovenere, a small town off the coast of Italy enjoys beautiful views of the pristine Mediterranean Sea. The town sprawls across a 7-km stretch and houses some of the best Italian restaurants I've been to. There are small independent markets scattered throughout the area, with the world-famous Cinque Terre only a 20-minute train ride away. We rented a cute Italian villa on the seafront and couldn't have been happier about our decision. When I went to the small kiosk down the alleyway from my villa, I picked up some postcards to send to friends, and to my surprise, the villas that beautifully occupied the space on the postcard were the same picturesque colored villas I was staying in. We reveled in the gorgeous views of the Mediterranean Sea from our balcony and savored the world-class hospitality by the natives. If you can get away from your villa, there are a plethora of historical sites and cultural vestiges to keep you occupied such as the Churches of St. Peter and St. Lawrence. Our villa was fully-furnished and often rented out to foreigners on a short-term basis. When we went, for a villa with 3 bedrooms/bath, it was 1,700 Euros for a week. Surely, the prices have increased in the past 4 years. It's really such a great getaway and a beautiful way to spend your time in Italy. Walking along the Mediterranean Sea harbor has never been so easy.
