Karori Wildlife Sanctuary: Karori Wildlife Sanctuary

When I look back on our time in Wellington, one of my few regrets is that we didn’t discover the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary earlier in our stay. Instead, it was only a couple of weeks before we left the city that we made the trip through Kelburn and into Karori.

With its native birds and bush, its walking tracks and lake, the Wildlife Sanctuary is really something special. We walked until our feet hurt, up the hill, across the dam and back again, stopping in one of the many picnic areas for our home-made sandwiches and stopping in at the viewing hides to spy on the wildlife on the lake.

We also managed to see one of the park’s tuataras. The native reptiles, with ancestry that dates back to the dinosaurs, aren’t that common on mainland New Zealand, so it was great to see one up close in a relatively wild environment.

Another highlight was putting on the provided hard hats to explore an old goldmine. The sanctuary staff also gave us torches to navigate our way along the dark, damp tunnel. However, the best part was when we got to the end, turned the torches off, and were surrounded by hundreds of glow worms.

I would have said that the sanctuary was peaceful – but we were there during the school holidays, so there were definitely noisy parts! However, the huge area that the sanctuary covers managed to accommodate us all, and in parts, it felt like we were the only two people there.

Entry into the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary is $10.00 for adults, and the park is open between 10am and 5pm. Although we didn’t get a chance to take up their offer, the staff in the visitor centre said that there were also guided tours of the Sanctuary (both day and night options) available for an extra charge.
