The Blue Lagoon: Reykjavik - The Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is one of Iceland's most famous tourist attractions, and, in keeping with this, is suitably crowded even on a week day. Although it's not precisely cheap (1800kr, or roughly £14), it remains a must-see. You don't need to be a swimmer, as the water is waist high at the most, and while there are a couple of unpleasant squelchy patches underfoot, it's mostly soft sand. It's child-friendly in that armbands are provided free, and so is entry for the under 11s. My nephews, aged 4 and 18 months, both adored it.
The Blue Lagoon was my first stop in Iceland. I got off my flight feeling typically grouchy, and within a couple of hours found myself luxuriating in warm, milky-blue waters. Because of its situation, just off the main road between Keflavik International and Reykjavik, it's a popular place to come and shake off airport tension. Being a week day, while it was well-peopled, it was by no means unpleasantly crowded.
The lagoon itself is seawater, geothermally heated by a nearby power plant and allowed to run off into this man-made pool. It's absolutely clean, purported to have healing properties, and an unbeatable cure for taut muscles. The contrast of cold Icelandic air and toasty geothermal water is both ivigorating and soothing at one and the same time: quite a unique experience!
As for the visual impact - it's certainly striking. The water itself is more akin to a manufactured sports drink than anything natural, and its colour against the grey-black lava rocks around is truly otherworldly.
Apart from swimming, you can plaster your face with Blue Lagoon mud - a white paste provided free in a wooden box at the water's edge. I can't say I noticed any improvement in my skin afterwards, but if nothing else, it's an effective exfoliant!
More delightful to me was the waterfall beneath which you can sit and have your back, shoulders and - should you choose - head, battered into submission by hot water. If you're a fan of powerful massages, this is definitely for you!
After our swim we were able to eat lunch in the slightly up-market restaurant overlooking the lagoon waters. For around £30 we enjoyed 3 courses (I would recommend the salmon and advise against the lamb), and were introduced to our first taste of "skyr" - a yoghurt like dessert, served with fresh fruit, of which the Icelanders seem very fond.
All in all, it was a fabulous introduction to our stay in Iceland.
