This café has proved a godsend to me. It's situated on Perth Road, which is easily accessible from the city centre, the train station, bus station, and by car. It's a traditional Scottish café layout at the front, with tables and waitress service, and cakes on display at the counter. At the back, squashy sofas allow those in a more leisurely frame of mind to relax and take their time.
We arrived at around 11am having failed to have breakfast, and starving. Everyone ordered a full Scottish breakfast, which appeared with alacrity. It was grilled, which was a bit of a disappointment (if you're going to be unhealthy, you want the full fried experience), but it was hot, filling and tasty. More importantly, the coffee was excellent, the service friendly and efficient, and the cakes ...
Ah, the cakes.
We had, between us: 1 slice of tiffin (a Scots biscuit/chocolate slice, with raisins running through), a slice of chocolate cake and ice cream, a slice double chocolate mars bar crispie cake and some rocky road. The tiffin, mars bar crispie cake and rocky road were freshly baked, and melt in the mouth good. The chocolate slice was less to my taste, being slightly floury, but my friend Helen insisted I was crazy and proceeded to consume the leftovers with gusto - so it was obviously a simple matter of opinion.
If you're not up for a blow-out breakfast, you can be far more conservative, with such options as Greek yoghurt, porridge, home made muffins, teacakes, crumpets, bagels ... All in all, an excellent array.
If you're in Dundee at breakfast time, I can't recommend Tartan highly enough. It's also got a good lunch menu, but not having sampled it I can't really comment.
The price is also a pleasant surprise, with a full Scottish coming in at £5.95 and most tray bakes at £1.20. A large cappucino is £1.85, which is cheaper than Satrbucks, last time I checked. The lunch menu keeps all dishes under £6, so for a cheap, tasty meal - this is definitely the place in Dundee.
