Kloster Ettal: Ettal Abbey

Ettal Abbey is located in the small town of Ettal which is easily visited in combination with the near by palace of King Ludwig II, Linderhof palace. The abbey of course is considerably older and dates back to 1330 and was founded by Holy Roman Emperor Ludwig IV the Bavarian. At one time it served as a double monastery, one for women and a separate for men. At the same time it served as a house of the Teutonic Knights. Most of what you see today was built in the baroque expansion of the early 1700’s. One of the reasons I make sure to have a visit any time I’m any where near the area is for the abbey’s brewery. Ettal monastery produces some of the best beer in the region and in my opinion would be a complete shame to miss.

4 stars for the abbey, and an extra one for their beer!
