It was in Oudtshoorn that the farming of ostridges started gaining economically meaningful proportions. Today the city is known as the world capital of ostridges. So of course you have to visit one of its many farms – and stand on top of a huge egg that will sustain your weight without breaking itself.

Mounting ostridges is challenging, especially steering the bird by the neck – while trying to avoid being kicked against the lateral wood “rodeo” protections. Their feathers are quite harsh – they will scratch and bleed your legs if you are using shorts.

Also stroll around the city to enjoy some of the colonial style architecture.
