Thames Lunch Cruise: Thames Lunch Cruise, Bateaux London

Many of this city’s great sights are located along the Thames: the London Eye, the Globe Theatre, the Tower of London and the Tower Bridge, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. What better way to see them all, then, than from the Thames itself, cruising down the river in an open top boat.

For my birthday, back in January, I was given a lastminute.com voucher which allowed me to choose from a set of London experiences. With the weather finally getting warmer in early July, I chose a Thames lunch cruise for two with Bateaux London.

Our booking confirmation said we should be at Embankment at 11.45. The boat didn’t leave till after the 12.30 departure time, so there was a lot of waiting around in the on-river departure lounge. Like there is for every form of transport here in London, there was a rush to get on and get the best seats as soon as the doors of the boat were opened. However, in this case, we noticed that our tickets had assigned us to a table, so we could afford to take our time.

Of course, the table we were assigned to was the only one that was against a wall rather than a window, which rather limited our initial viewing experience. However, when I noticed that there were unsold tables, I asked if we could be moved. Not a problem. The staff were great. And from the new table, we had a great view out the windows on both sides of the boat.

On the way up the river, towards the Tower Bridge, we were pretty much left to our food. The Bateaux London staff brought out one course after another: pate and sourdough bread followed by chicken and roast vegetables followed by a dark chocolate tort. Overall, the food wasn’t fantastic, but no matter, we were really there for the scenery.

One thing to note though is that drinks (apart from the tea and coffee at the end) are not included in the ticket price for the cruise – a couple of glasses of wine, and a bottle of water, and our bill soon added up to about £15.00.

On the return journey, from the Tower Bridge back to Embankment, we were told stories by a pre-recorded voice about the landmarks that we passed. According to the guide-on-tape, the Thames is one of the cleanest urban rivers in the world, but it’s still brown-looking and I was glad to be on top of it rather than in it.

We arrived back at Embankment at about 2.00pm, making our cruise approximately one and a half hours in length. Bateaux London also offers ‘Elite Lunch Cruises’ (which include a half bottle of wine for each diner), a variety of dinner cruises, and private charters.
