Florida has a number of unique historical structures. One that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places is the House of Refuge in Martin County, Florida. This small but important building was one of ten such structures that served as havens for shipwrecked sailors and stranded traveler's along Florida's east coast. It had been commissioned by the United States Treasury Department. It later served as a lookout for submarine activity along the coast during the WW I era. Of the ten refuge houses constructed along the coast, the one at Stuart is the only one remaining. It fell into some disrepair and was damaged during the Hurricanes of 2004. Today it is once again open for visitors. Hours are Monday – Saturday from 10 am to 4 pm. Sunday the hours are 1 pm to 4 pm. The admission price is $5.00 USD (as of 2008) for adults and $2.00 USD for children ranging from 6 years to 13 years of age.
