Birmingham: Birmingham Central Backpackers

Birmingham Central Backpackers, as the name suggests, is located near the centre of Birmingham (or at least a short walk from a sign which says ‘Welcome to the City Centre’). It’s also a relatively short walk from Moor Street and New Street train stations, the Digbeth Coach Station, and the Queenway Priory bus stops, down past the huge Bull Ring shopping centre and into a red-brick industrial area.

We got to the address we’d been given, on the corner of Milk and Coventry Streets, only to be told that we were staying around at their second building, on Little Ann Street, above the Floodgate Tavern. Another short walk.

The upper level of the Floodgate tavern looked like it had been freshly painted, with purple and turquoise walls, and dried paint splotches on the sinks. Our twin room was decorated in a similar manner, with colourful swatches of patterned fabric on top of the drawers and framed on the walls. Bright yellow bedspreads, and small round mirrors, and surprisingly, a TV.

Back at the first building, there’s a fantastic common room, with couches, a pool table, games, a huge video collection, and free wireless internet. There was breakfast provided on Sunday morning (and I presume this happens every morning): toast and spreads, hot drinks, fruit and even biscuits. There’s also a small kitchen for those who want to cook their own meals.

The staff were great, laid back, friendly and full of knowledge about their adopted city. Kudos also has to go to whoever came up with the idea of a notice board with the tear-off strips of paper which give directions to Birmingham’s most popular attractions – those were useful time and again, as were the piles of pamphlets I found on the ledge beneath them.

I’m not sure if we’ll be back to Birmingham – there’s so many other places in the UK that we still want to visit – but if we do return, I’d definitely consider staying at the Birmingham Central Backpackers again.
