Ostengland (East Anglia): Cadbury World

Located in Bournville, a short train ride south of Birmingham, Cadbury World is the home of those famous purple-clad dairy milk chocolate bars that are such a temptation on every trip to the supermarket.

Milk chocolate, liquid chocolate, chocolate buttons, chocolate with nuts, and the biggest Cadbury store in the world… what could be a better way for a chocolate-lover to spend an afternoon?

With multimedia presentations, chocolate tastings, interactive games, and a glimpse into the factory, it indeed seems that Cadbury World has something for all ages.

However, it may be worth noting from the beginning, that not everything is for everyone. The Cadabra Ride, for example, with its very tame moving cars and swaying cocoa beans in family dress, is probably not the best for a couple of mid-twenty year olds, unaccompanied by children. It’s definitely not worth queuing for, at any rate – if we knew in advance that we could miss it, we would have.

It’s also probably best, again if you’re a couple in your mid-twenties, not to go on a Sunday afternoon, during the school holidays, on one of the only fine afternoons that we’ve had in the UK this summer. Despite having a timed entrance ticket, we could barely move forward in the first part of the exhibition, let alone read the information about how the Aztecs first made chocolate.

After a while the crowds spread out, and we were able to stand mesmorised by the machines which put wrappers on the chocolate bars and watch the videos which showed the making of Crème Eggs and Turkish Delight.

I left Cadbury World feeling that it would’ve been nice to see more of the actual factory rather than so many presentations about the factory – but, with so many visitors, I guess that’s not really feasible. I also left with a two dairy milk bars, a pack of chocolate buttons, a bag of direct-from-the-factory ‘mis-shapes’ and a magnet to remember it by once all that chocolate was gone.

Normal adult tickets for Cadbury World, purchased at the door, are £13. However, we rang ahead and reserved a train-plus-entry pass, gave our reservation number at the station, and managed to get in on the group entry price despite the fact that there were only two of us in our group. It took us about three hours to visit both the main exhibitions, and the smaller ‘Essence’ area.
