Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church: Easter Mass in Sunshine

Easter can be a fun holiday for Catholics and non-Catholics alike. One tradition is to attend Easter Mass with family and friends and then go for brunch afterwards. If you are interested in experiencing Easter Mass (or any Sunday mass actually) at a pleasant church, I suggest attending services at Our Lady of Immaculate Conception in Sunshine. Their address is 92 Monash Street. One thing that I appreciate about this particular church is its attention to diversity. For example, there are masses in English, Spanish, Filipino/Tagalog, and Vietnamese (dates and times vary). Father Harry Dyer leads the Sunshine parish, but other Fathers assist him. It was very interesting to see and hear a South Asian priest guide Easter Mass, and I thought his stories and lessons resonated with the diverse community members in attendance that day. The church itself is not too large, was built in the early 1900s, and is pretty traditional as Catholic churches go. For special holiday masses, try to get there early to secure a seat. People typically dress in nice slacks, skirts, and shirts, but jeans will do if you are neat. Service is generally an hour long and there is an overhead projector screen with information to guide you during songs and prayers. In case you don’t know, there are two rounds of donation collection during the service. This was new to me as an American. You are not obligated to give any money, but a few dollars goes a long way.
