Ukraine is not exactly on the tourist trail, most people tend to think of it as grey, backwards, and slightly rogue. Well, there's some truth to that, it's certainly not the most modern country in the world, nor does it set new standards as a state in terms of stability and rule of law, but it is certainly colorful and defenitely a great place to visit. You can't really sum it up in a sentence, the country is extremely diverse. The west and north mostly speak Ukrainian, the south and east speak Russian and often consider themselves to be Russian, few people speak English, though in the major cities in the west and in Yalta you'll be fine. Ukrainians are very proud and sometimes a bit annoyed that Europe has forgotten them, but they welcome tourists that are there because of the country, not because of a desperate need for a Russian bride. Still, beware that they are sometimes cheeky when it comes to tourists and will try to rip you of whenever you pay for a taxi or other services. Ukraine is exciting and beautiful, and it deserves to be put on the tourist map.
